The Doncaster Athletic Club has lost one of its
greatest athletes and finest people. David Baxter lost
his brave fight with cancer on July 2nd. DAC wishes to pass
on its deepest sympathies
to David’s mum
Gillian Baxter, and his wife
Judith.
The term
champion is often overused when talking of sportspeople, but with
David this was the perfect description. He represented Australia
at the 1996 World Junior Championships, 1997 and 2001 University Games,
1998 World Cup, 1999 World Championships, 1999 World Indoors and the 2002
Commonwealth Games where he won a Bronze medal in the 4 x 100m relay team.
He was also the 1995 and 1996 National Junior Champion over 100m. He is
the current club record holder for the 100m (10.3 secs) and 200m (20.57
secs).
But there
was far more to David than a truly elite athlete. He was
a wonderful role model who was immensely generous with his advice
and encouragement of others, as well as his commitment to the Club off the
track. David was a much loved friend to so many at DAC
and across the sport of track and field.
Many coaches have said David was one of
the most gifted athletes they had ever seen, leaving no stone unturned in
endeavouring to reach the pinnacle of the sport. David
represented the Doncaster Athletic Club, Victoria and Australia with
excellence, pride and honour.
Rest in Peace David. You were an
outstanding athlete and an outstanding person who will be sadly missed by
all.
