Results
from National Junior Championships
Isabella Dalla
Costa competed in both the U14G Triple Jump and U14G Long Jump
coming 6th in the T/J and 3rd in the L/J. It was a great meet for
her – inspired her to keep training and go back for more -
especially for gold!! Way off her PB in the TJ as she hurt her knee
during warm-up somehow but with some hefty knee strapping, she
jumped closer to her usual distance in the long.
I don't have full details of who went
to Sydney for the Aust. Championships last week/weekend but I do
know Natalie Rule had a sensational weekend winning both the
800m + 1500m U15 girls titles - the first time she has won a
National title.
I also believe Natalie's 1500m
time of 4.39.00 will be a new DAC U14 age based record - by running
a 2.13.17, she missed Bronte's 800m record by .36sec, and
whilst it doesn't count, she absolutely smashed the DLAC records for
both events.
Bronte ran 2nd in the U20 800m,
just missing out on a world junior qualifying time.
Breanna Large had a great javelin
competition with a PB 41.36m and 4th place

Handicap Events
It was a great turnout on Thursday evening
for the running of the handicap events. Provisional winners are:
Peter Ruff 100m handicap - George
Barboutov
Tom Kelly 2000m steeple for women -
Ashley Wahlburg
Ivan Harding 800m handicap for men -
Mathew Woodgate
Adam Robertson javelin handicap - Mr Robbo
has confirmed Breanna Large's
40.38m PB to be the winner. Runner up was Andrew Duck
45.46m and Ed Vining 38.78m 3rd.

Full results will be published as soon as
they are to hand. 101 photos are in the

gallery and click on the link or photo to the 2010 handicap

National Cross Country Trials
The Australian cross country trials to
select a team to attend the world championships in Poland in March were
held at Victoria's Brimbank Park.
Doncaster was represented in the Open
Women's 8km race by Fiona Nash while Grace Thek lined up
in the women's Under 20 6km event. Grace finished 2nd in
her race and was selected to represented Australia at the world
championships. This is Grace's first full National
representation.
Fiona Nash looked extremely good
passing through 4km in a lead group that included former world champion
Benita Willis, Zatopek winner Elouise Wellings and several national
representatives. Shortly afterwards however Fiona stepped in a
hole rolling her ankle and was then forced to withdraw from the race.
Congratulations to Grace who becomes
the 3rd Doncaster athlete coached by Patrick Ashkettle to make an
Australian world championship team in as many years.

National
Cross Country Championships Update and Insight
Extract of Chris'
email to Kate.
Patrick
(Goodwill) ran really well given what has happened to him in
recent times, but more importantly, the whole team ran well and
they picked up 1st place from the W.A. and NSW schools teams, so
John Meagher has done it again, coached another (i think this is
his third in eight years) team to go off to the World's......
It was a day of
amazing contrasts, nice cool weather early when Natalie Rule
ran (3rd), pouring rain prior and during the first lap of Pat's
race, clearing for Grace's race (1st), warming up for
Fiona's (3rd) and then hot and sunny for Joel's
(2nd). The finish area looked like a war zone for the last two
races which included Joel's, kids collapsing everywhere.
The paramedics and others were flat out keeping up.
The four individual
medalists from DAC were each fantastic performances in their own
way, and whilst is it probably wrong to pick one out, Grace's
win was brilliant, it really was special and the fact that our
Pat also collected a gold medal, albeit a team one was
great...Grace and Pat giving high fives and hugs to each other
was one of many highlights. To see so many kids smiling was just
fantastic.
So a great weekend
was had by many Vic's.
Chris Goodwill
Emails from Patrick Ashkettle
Saturday 29 August 1:33p.m.
Just letting you know that about 30 mins ago
Grace Thek (Doncaster AC) won the Under 20 women's 6km national
cross country title in Nowra NSW.
Grace ran around 21.45 for the wet
hilly 2 lap course with second place running around 22.20.
Saturday 7:35p.m.
After my perusal of results it looks like we
had just 4 people at cross country nationals in Nowra NSW and everyone
of them won a medal!!
Here are the results. The girls U16 and U18
results aren't up yet.
Grace Thek, women's under 20 6km 1st
place, 21.46
Joel Tobin-White, boys under 16 4km
2nd place, 13.12.25
Fiona Nash, women's open 8km, 3rd
place, 30.22
Natalie Rule, women's under 14 3km,
3rd place, 10.42.36
We think that Joel's race had
something at stake with a schools team being selected for an overseas
competition.
Fiona Nash, who won the state cross
country title at Bundoora this year, begins to put herself in contention
for the Australian team to contest the world cross country championships
in Poland next year.
Likewise for Grace. Grace in
fact finished 6th this year at the national trials in Canberra which
meant that she had made the selection cut off. However the selectors
elected to just send a team of 4 instead of the expected 6. So this is
a good step towards selection.

Bill
Chambers Cross Country Handicap
What a sensational autumn morning it
was in Ruffey Lake Park on Saturday morning. Unfortunately only
8 athletes turned up to contest the annual 6km Bill Chamber
Cross Country Handicap.
After a sizzling first lap of the
3km course the pace was too hot for Courtney Goodwill and
Maree Tunnecliffe and they withdrew at the half way
mark. This left 6 athletes to battle the 2nd lap for line
honours.
After 3 km a strong start from
sprinter/multi eventer Harry George looked like he might
run down the field from the back mark. However it was Ashlee
Walberg who held on and crossed the finish line in first
place.
Harry was fastest over the 6k
course (23:54) and first male home while Ashlee's winning
time was 25:38.

DAC athlete competes Internationally . . . . for Malta
James D'Alfonso wasn't at the AGM
and Presentation Night because he is currently overseas competing
for his families nationality of origin - Malta.
James came 3rd in the Men's 400m,
9th in the 100m and Malta defeated France and Northern Athletic UK
in the 4x400m relay at the Malta Invitational Track & Field Meet on
April 18.

Club Records for Ben
On Tuesday 14th August, training at the
Doncaster athletic track took on a heightened atmosphere with Ben
Ashkettle having a crack at the Australian 1 hour and 20,000m
track records. That is 50 laps. Ben needed to run consistently
under 77 seconds per lap to extent the 1 hour record and managed to
add almost another 400m to the record.
To summarize on Bens performance (and
still unofficial), he ran the following splits:
5000m in 15.53, 8km in 25.19, 10km in
31.41, 15km in 47.21, 20km in 62.46 (10km splits of 31.41 and 31.05)
At the 1 hour mark, Ben passed through
19,074km. Previous mark was 18,678km by Tony Bart (SA) run on 29
Aug 1973 in Adelaide.
The 20,000m record was held by Max
Little (TAS) at 70.03.8 run in Melbourne on 5 Oct 1968.
Two very old (and rarely attempted)
records, but both eclipsed by fair margins. Unfortunately, AA
wouldn't ratify these records however they stand as club records.

Ex Member Stars in World Cup Rowing
Congratulations to ex athlete and committee member Kim Crow
who, earlier this month, won the women's pairs final at the Rowing
World Cup in Linz, Austria. Kim was also a member of the
women's eight that came 5th.
Kim had to retire from athletics due to stress fractures and was
spotted on a rowing machine by the rowing staff at the VIS. A
couple of years later Kim is now winning world cup rowing
events.
Coached by our Tommy Kelly, Kim was a talented athlete
winning a silver medal at the World Junior Championships a few years
back.
Well done Kim....your old mates at Doncaster are very proud
of you.

2007 World Cross Country Championships
Staging the world cross country
championships in Kenya was heralded as 'cross country coming
home'. Not that Kenya had any role in founding the origins
of this event but that so many champions have originated
from this tiny country. In fact, over the past 20 years
Kenya have accounted for more than half of all possible
medals from these championships.
Held in the coastal port of
Mombassa, the sea breeze did little to the conditions as
temperatures soared up towards 40 degrees leading into the
event and humidity levels hovered up in the 90's. Making a
mockery of any winter traditions for cross country
running, race day temperatures were in the mid 30's and
humidity in the mid 80's. There were four races held, a
junior women's and junior men's, and a senior women's and
senior men's.
he first race of the day was the
junior women's race with Kenya running in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and
7th to take out the teams event and taking all 3 individual
medals up for grabs. Best of the Australian trio was
Frankston's Rachel Green in an impressive 29th. In the
junior men's race Kenya finished an impressive 1st, 2nd,
3rd, 4th and 11th, producing the best possible score of 10
points from their first four across the line. First
Australian home in the junior men's was Ben Guest, an
impressive 51st. Only a handful of non-African continental
runners finished ahead of Ben and some of those from the
likes of Qatar and Europe had familiar African rings to
them. Ben Ashkettle (Doncaster AC) ran 76th after
passing the first 2km lap in 88th and slowly making his way
forward of this part of the field. Ben had been ill
just a couple of days prior to the race so made a good
recovery to get through the demanding 8km circuit.
Australia did not place in the teams event as the two other
Australian competitors succumbed to the heat and did not
finish. There were 455 competitors at these championships
and 85 of them pulled out somewhere around the journey, most
as a result of the heat and humidity.
In the senior men's, Doncaster
winter athlete David McNeill came home in 63rd place
after passing the through the first 2km lap on the other
side of 100th place. David was also second
Australian home while the senior men's team finished a
credible 9th overall. Eritrean 20km road world champion
Tadesse upset pre-race favorite Bekele while Kenyan runners
came home in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th. Not
surprisingly taking out the teams title. It was an
outstanding world cross debut for McNeill who qualified as a
junior two years ago but did not make the trip after
officials elected to not send a junior team.
The best placed Australian at
the championships was Anna Thompson of Glenhuntly who placed
18th in the senior women's race. Anna was followed home by
Victoria Mitchell (37th), Lisa Jane Weightman (42nd), Sarah
Salmon (57th) and Kristy Villis (64th). The Australian
women's team came home in a highly credible 6th place. Lisa
Jane Weightman of Knox has a close association with
Doncaster as she dates leading Doncaster senior Lachlan
McArthur. The senior women's winner was former Kenyan Lorna
Kiplagat of Netherlands who completely dominated the field
from early into the race. Ethiopia won the teams battle
with Kenya in second.
