 XC10 after round 3

Hi Everyone

Well round 3 is over and what a great day we had at Sandown, no rain this year.  yeh!!!

The Under 14 & 16's were first up running 3km one lap of the track.

In our under 14's Charlotte, Megan and Kirsten all got PB's and a team 1st, Chow ran for the first time with an excellent time.

Our under 16's had Ashlee running and for the boys first timers James and Larry, who all came home strongly.

In under 18's Rachel ran for a first time and ran well, I hope she enjoyed herself.

Then Tommy and some of us stayed to watch the old timers run, the 10km. (you wont ever see me do that!)

But hats off to Kate, who between feeds of her 3mth old, managed to make 10km look easy, by talking to Charmaine the whole way round. Claire, who last year only had to do 3km's, did a great effort to extend it to 10km's this year. We had another lass do the 10km but I didnt get her name.  For the men Adrian, Roderic, William and in under 20's Nathan all did the club proud.

Some photos attached.

Well guys our next race is Saturday the 19 June 2010, Lake Wendouree, Ballarat.

This is a 5km Junior race and 15km scenic race for the rest.

You can enter online at www.athsvic.org.au if you haven't got a season ticket already.

Will see you all around the track or at a comp.

Cheers,

Bronwyn Walburg

2009

 National Cross Country Trials

The Australian cross country trials to select a team to attend the world championships in Poland in March were held over the weekend at Victoria's Brimbank Park.

Doncaster was represented in the Open Women's 8km race by Fiona Nash while Grace Thek lined up in the women's Under 20 6km event.  Grace finished 2nd in her race and has now been selected to represented Australia at the world championships.  This will be Grace's first full National representation.

Fiona Nash looked extremely good passing through 4km in a lead group that included former world champion Benita Willis, Zatopek winner Elouise Wellings and several national representatives.  Shortly afterwards however Fiona stepped in a hole rolling her ankle and was then forced to withdraw from the race.

Congratulations to Grace who becomes the 3rd Doncaster athlete coached by Patrick Ashkettle to make an Australian world championship team in as many years.

 Winter video from the Walburg's

Hi Guys hopes this works, the girls and I have put together some photos of the season and turned it into a small movie with music (Ashlee's choices) If you have windows media player it will work, photos look a little distorted due to cheap camera and translation into photo story. Hope you all enjoy it, Ashlee did do a 20 minute version but we have down sized to under 8 minutes so we could email it . . . . click here

Enjoy Bronwyn, Ashlee and Kirsten.

This photo story was created using Photo Story 3 for Windows. You can view it with Windows Media Player or any program that plays Windows Media Video (WMV) files.

National Cross Country Championships Update and Insight

Extract of Chris' email to Kate.

Patrick (Goodwill) ran really well given what has happened to him in recent times, but more importantly, the whole team ran well and they picked up 1st place from the W.A. and NSW schools teams.  The team is now off to the World's......

It was a day of amazing contrasts, nice cool weather early when Natalie Rule ran (3rd), pouring rain prior and during the first lap of Pat's race, clearing for Grace's race (1st), warming up for Fiona's (3rd) and then hot and sunny for Joel's (2nd). The finish area looked like a war zone for the last two races which included Joel's, kids collapsing everywhere. The paramedics and others were flat out keeping up.

The four individual medalists from DAC were each fantastic performances in their own way, and whilst is it probably wrong to pick one out, Grace's win was brilliant, it really was special and the fact that our Pat also collected a gold medal, albeit a team one was great...Grace and Pat giving high fives and hugs to each other was one of many highlights. To see so many kids smiling was just fantastic.

So a great weekend was had by many Vic's.

Chris Goodwill

Emails from Patrick Ashkettle

Saturday 29 August 1:33p.m.

Just letting you know that about 30 mins ago Grace Thek (Doncaster AC) won the Under 20 women's 6km national cross country title in Nowra NSW.

Grace ran around 21.45 for the wet hilly 2 lap course with second place running around 22.20.

Saturday 7:35p.m.

After my perusal of results it looks like we had just 4 people at cross country nationals in Nowra NSW and everyone of them won a medal!!

Here are the results.  The girls U16 and U18 results aren't up yet.

Grace Thek, women's under 20 6km 1st place, 21.46

Joel Tobin-White, boys under 16 4km 2nd place, 13.12.25

Fiona Nash, women's open 8km, 3rd place, 30.22

Natalie Rule, women's under 14 3km, 3rd place, 10.42.36

We think that Joel's race had something at stake with a schools team being selected for an overseas competition.

Fiona Nash, who won the state cross country title at Bundoora this year, begins to put herself in contention for the Australian team to contest the world cross country championships in Poland next year.

Likewise for Grace.  Grace in fact finished 6th this year at the national trials in Canberra which meant that she had made the selection cut off.  However the selectors elected to just send a team of 4 instead of the expected 6.  So this is a good step towards selection.
