Sandown Skins Classic- Victorian 3km & 10km road championships
The Sandown car race circuit in Springvale was the host venue for
the Athletics Victoria 10km and 3km road race championships. For
the Doncaster athletic club there was a
little hope that the micro climates of Victoria would smile on them and it would stay dry for this annual event. It wasn't to be as steady rain fell and temperatures in the order
of 8-10 degrees greeted participants in both races.
The 3km event was first on the program with women's Under 14, U16
and U18 contesting this distance and the men's U14 and U16 doing
likewise. Doncaster was well represented
across the board. The Doncaster women's under 18 team won their teams event with Sam Carberry picking up the individual title, Bronte Gange in second and Keshia Contini (5th)
rounding out the team score. The Doncaster women's under 14 team of Natalie Rule (7th), Ashlee Warlberg (19th) and Courtney Goodwill (31st) finished 5th in the teams event.
In the men's under 16 Joel Tobin-White continued to show he is improving and picked up a bronze medal while Anita Strauks (11th in U16), Sarah Casey (11th in U20) and
Cameron Hunter (12th in U16) also featured well.
In the 10km race the teams event is as much prized as individual
honours so there is always much pressure for the each clubs runners
to turn out and try to out do their other division 1
rivals like Box Hill, Glenhuntly and Knox. Olympian Lee Troop (Geelong) took out the major race in 28.50 just one second ahead of NSW visitor Michael Shelley. First Doncaster runner was
first time senior Matt Johnsen in 30.57 and 16th place with former Olympian Rod DeHighden (18th) and Allan Failla (20th) also scoring well. The Doncaster men finished 7th in division 1
and will be looking to improve on that performance at the Coliban relays in late June.
In the junior men's ranks
Nathan Carr was 10th in 35.05 with
Pat Forno just 12 seconds and 1 place back.
