Round 2 of the Athletics Victoria Regional Shield Competition got underway at Doncaster Athletics Track over the weekend with a beautiful 27 degree day. It was a day dominated by family presence with the Coumaros, Thompson, Finch, Caldwell and Lane families featuring highly in all the results. Notable performances include father and daughter duo Peter and Natasha Coumaros winning their respective shotput events and son, Conrad showing his speed in the 200m. Brother and sister; Tim and Abbey Caldwell competed in numerous events throughout the day – with Abbey wining the 800m and 3000m track events and Tim winning the High Jump.

Doncaster showed its distance strength with Natalie Rule and Georgie Buckley both dominating the 800m event, and Nick Finch, Antony Baldwin, Chow Lui and Charlottle Bassett all finishing in 2nd for their respective age groups. Andrew Reddie won Open 3000m mens race in a time just under 9 minutes and Jessica O’Keefe ran well to finish in second in the U/18 girls race.

Big name hurdlers were spotted competing; Bree Walker (2013 Australian University Games winner)  won the 400m Hurdles with Steph Larkin finishing not to far behind in the womans race. In the Mens event, Alex De Medio and Callum Byrne both ran well to finish second for their age groups. In the shorter 300m hurdle events Chris Ghersi and Sarah Fitt both finished well to collect 2nd place for the U/16 and U/18 respective age groups.

Doncaster’s relay teams were in full flight over the Medley Distance (800m, 400m, 200m, and 200m) finishing within the top 3 in almost every age group. The Men’s U/18 team won their race by a gap of 24seconds and the Open Woman’s team won by a mere 17seconds. These results are promising as the Victorian State Relay Championship are just a few weeks away on the 27th of November 2013 at the Lakeside Stadium.
