Round 2 of the Victorian XCR season was run out at Lander Park, Warrigal; which has always been renowned for its technical course, which usually incorporates hopping over paddock fences, weaving hay bails and tackling the muddy surface.
As this is the first race individual race of the season, each athlete that places within the top 10 of their respective age group receives premiership points based on position; with the athletes that score the highest by the end of round 11 taking the premiership title.
Doncaster Athletes, Charlotte Bassett, Katie Gamble and Ben Ashkettle were amongst the points, with Charlotte winning the U/18 Woman’s event in 10:44min, 12 seconds ahead of her Geelong competitor. Katie and Ben finished 4th and 5th respectively in the U/20 Woman’s and Open Men’s events.
Every competitor that takes places also receives points towards the clubs overall position in each respective age group, and after solid performances at Jells Park a fortnight early, Doncaster were keen to maintain their high standings.
Overall, the Open Men’s team finished 2nd in Division 2 behind Diamond Valley AC, however still maintain top spot after their victory in Round 1. The Open Woman’s team are currently in 2nd overall in Division 2, after finishing in 3rd place over the weekend.
The next event is at Brimbank Park on the 31st of May which is a grueling 16km race that includes the infamous ‘Col de Brimbank’.
