DAC Newsletter Australian Championships edition

Twenty four DAC athletes contested the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney last week and our athletes performed extremely well with four gold, one silver and five bronze medals won and one club record being broken.

Standout performances came from:

–        Connor Gist completed her comeback from Achilles injuries which threatened to derail her season, finishing fifth in the final of the super competitive Open 800m competition

–        Para athlete Anthony Jordan won medals in all three of his events in his debut at the national championships while fellow Para athlete Abbey Gartlan continued her medal winning from in the Para Discus competition

–        Owen Rice showed remarkable consistency in all three of his throwing events winning Bronze in Under 16 Shot Put and placing fourth in Under 16 Discus and Hammer Throw

–        In her second appearance at the Championships, Under 16 horizontal jumper Petra Edwards showed she has a bright future winning bronze in the Triple Jump and finishing 5th in Long Jump

–        And Declan Carman had another standout performance winning gold in the Discus Throw and Shot Put, the latter performance breaking James Joycey’s two year old club record

We would like to congratulate Abbey Caldwell (Under 20 1500m) and Stephanie Ratcliffe (Under 20 Hammer Throw) who have been selected in the Australian team for the Oceania Athletics Championships to be held in Townsville from the 25th – 28th of June. Both athletes have demonstrated great dedication to their training and performed consistently well throughout the summer and as a club we wish them both all the best with their preparation and for the competition.

Upcoming event: DAC Presentation Night & AGM

We look forward to seeing as many members as possible at our Presentation Night & AGM on Friday 17th of May at the DAC pavilion (6:45pm arrival for a 7pm start). The night will be an opportunity for the club to recognise our athletes, officials, coaches, volunteers and life members and will feature two Olympic level guest speakers who will talk about what it takes to compete at the highest level.
Please save the date and come along for what promises to be a fantastic night for the club.
