2019-09-21 Round 10 The Tan

Doncaster Newsletter

26 September, 2019

Saturday 21st September saw 61 DAC athletes take on the final round of the XCR season; relays around Melbourne’s iconic “Tan”.  DAC fielded no less than 19 teams, with 3 of them (Women’s Div 4, Women’s U20 and U14) all achieving a podium finish. The fastest DAC male was Joshua Maisey (11.40) and fastest female was Abbey Caldwell (12.54); excellent performances for the 3.8km circuit, including the infamous Anderson Street hill!  Both have had great winter seasons.  The event also saw a number of athletes come out of hibernation, have a more achievable target in 3.8km, and join us in readiness for the summer season – it was great to have them along!  Thank you also to the Ruffey Runners group (for this final event Julie Martyn, Mary-Catherine Tobin & Kym Fabris) who have been extremely welcome at our relay events as invitation runners.  This final winter event saw a number of athletes compete for DAC for the first time.  Welcome to Chris Bramham, Luke Russell, David Blaire, Steve Venour, Rochelle Hamilton & Saffi Kiellerup. Luke actually ran with DAC a number of years and his return is a great addition to the team.

Following the event on Saturday, many DAC athletes had a celebratory brunch/morning tea at the Botanic Gardens café.  A big thank you goes to Julie Martyn, Mary-Catherine Tobin & Kym Fabris for kindly supplying some yummy post-run food.  We also thank club helpers, Luke Williams, Ben Lucas & Hank Kuys for giving up their Saturday morning for all our benefit!

Winter season wrap up

It has been a 6-month winter season, requiring great commitment from both athletes, volunteers and club officials.  Team managers and those who assisted week in week out; thank you to Campbell McLennan (and the whole McLennan crew) and Darryl Kilmartin. Thank you to all who have contributed so much!

No less than 111 athletes have been representing us over the winter season; 23 junior boys, 18 junior girls, 7 open Women and 14 Masters Women, 22 open Men and 27 Masters Men.   These numbers have contributed to strong team performances within very stiff competition.

Individual:

A number of individuals have had extremely successful winter seasons.  In the open men’s competition, Joel Tobin-White was placed 9th on the season ladder, particularly for his win at the first individual cross country event at St Anne’s.  Colleen Kelly was placed 3rd in the women’s 55+ ladder, showing very strong performances the entire season. Abbey Caldwell (U20) won every individual event of the season (and #1 on the ladder), demonstrating that she is one of Australia’s most promising junior distance runners. Jessica Ng (also U20) placed 10th for a very consistent season, in one relay event (Angelsea, stepping up to the men’s Div 1 team!)  Hannah Williams (U18) was placed 7th, and also enjoyed a very successful season.  Congratulations to all!

In terms of participation and contribution for the club, 2 athletes managed to run every winter season event (9 run in total due to cancellation of round 8).  Thank you and fantastic effort Jim Finch (50+) and Grace Wilson (U14).  As a result of their consistency both have enjoyed improved performances and are hopefully now ready for a great summer season.  Several other athletes managed all but 1 of the 9 XCR events: Caleb McLennan (U18), Jessica Ng and Abbey Caldwell (both U20), Maxime Plugge (Open), Jason Merrett (40+), Kath Gawthorn and Evelyn Kuys (both 40+).  All who have contributed to the events they could attend were greatly appreciated.  This includes the parents who drive their kids along and the partners who support athletes in the sometimes cold and wet conditions.  Thank you!

Thank you to all who have taken photographs which has helped us post albums consistently throughout the season, and to Nick Watson for some great pic’s at the Tan.

A huge thank you to Kath Gawthorn for writing all the winter newsletters!
