The fourth round of Shield was a novelty. AV had decided that all track events would be relays, and this was a very positive concept for most clubs as most appeared to have extra members coming out to support their club.
For Doncaster this meant the first appearance of some of our top men’s open runners, who were state champions in 2018. This paid dividends with the 4 x 100 team scoring a massive 2028 points and the mixed 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 scoring more. Unfortunately the 4 x 200 team was disqualified, an occupational hazard in relays. It was the same for the M40 team, having a big win in the 4 x 100 and a false start in the 4 x 200.
Special mention must be made of Laura McLennan and Kath Gawthorn, the only W40 runners, who competed in the 2 x 1500, 2 x 800 and mixed 4 x 400, and also fitted in some field events. According to the official results, somehow they also managed to run the women’s 4 x 400, though they don’t remember that. A special mention to 2017 Stawell Gift winner Liv Ryan who made her DAC debut in the Open Mixed 4×400 team.
Other teams to use the Power Play were Diamond Valley and Mornington Penisula, who turned out in force and finished ahead of Doncaster on sheer weight of numbers. So Diamond Valley won the M40 competition and M20, which Doncaster won the previous round, though retained first position in M16 and M14. The W40 came second to Diamond Valley, for the best result this year, and again won the W18.

AVSL returns to normal events this weekend at Nunawading and Aberfeldie and with pre-entries open until Wednesday there is still time to register for an event or two.
