2020-11-14 Return to Competition

Doncaster Newsletter

After a tumultuous eight months, we have finally reached the stage where we can return to doing what we all love, athletics!

The DAC committee has been working hard behind the scenes to ensure the club remains afloat and our members remain informed and stay connected. Our thanks to Athletics Victoria, Manningham council, Sport & Recreation Victoria and our club volunteers for their time and efforts to help us these last few months and providing us with guidance on implementing a COVID Safe plan at the club.

With a raft of events planned between now and late March and the club competing in Premier Division of AVSL, this season promises to be exciting and filled with opportunities.

Cruden Farm XC

AV welcomed back athletes and officials with a cross country race at Cruden Farm in Langwarrin on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th. Despite not being considered a club event, DAC had five athletes competing across both days of competition.

In the Open 6km race, Dave Ridley led from start to finish posting a time of 19:41 while David Mitchell ran 23:42 in his first XC race for DAC and Kath Gawthorn finished 13th in her race, running 35:43.

We had two representatives in the Junior 3km race with Rachel White finishing 11th in her session in a time of 11:56 and High Jumper Eliza Chivers came 19th in 13:35.

AVSL update

AV has released further information regarding how AVSL will be conducted this season. In a positive for the club, we are hosting the first four rounds of the season. This will provide us with a great opportunity to make a strong start in Premier Division and we want to encourage everyone to compete in all events to help us score points.

Notable changes to AVSL include:

–        Metro competitions are temporarily being held on Sundays instead of Saturdays. This is to avoid clashes with Little Athletics and to ensure venues are adequately sanitised and COVID safe before competition can commence. This day change is only temporary and we will be reverting to our normal Saturday timeslot as soon as possible, most likely post Christmas.

–        No on the day entries will be available this season due to contact tracing requirements for Athletics Victoria’s COVID safe plan

–        Competition will be held in one hour slots with each slot offering the same events. Athletes can only choose one, one hour slot to compete in and can only compete in the events offered in that slot.

–        Due to the onerous cleaning and sanitisation requirements, Javelin, Hammer Throw, Steeple, High Jump, Pole Vault and all Hurdles events are not being held until after round 6. Specialist meets such as High Velocity, Rare Air and AV Throwers are likely to offer these events next month. However, there is no indication when Steeple will be offered. These events may be offered at AVSL later in the season depending on Government restrictions.

A more detailed email will be sent in the coming days to provide further information about how AVSL will look in 2020/2021.

Reminder – Please register!

With summer almost here and squads preparing for competition, please remember to register as a club member if you wish to train at the track as this is a requirement of our COVID Safe protocols.

If you have already registered during the no-competition COVID period and wish to compete, membership upgrades are available and AV has upgraded their system ensuring you pay the required amount to upgrade from a non-competing to a competing membership.

If you have any questions please contact our registrar David Mitchell (registrar@doncasterac.org.au or 0456366046)

Uniforms

If you require a new uniform or are looking at purchasing extra uniform items, please contact our new uniform co-ordinator Kath Gawthorn (0447 494 509). We have a range of items including caps, training singlets and compression leggings among other things.
