XCR Round 6 – Bundoora Park – Saturday 23rd July

 Photos

What a day!  Saturday 23rd was the All Schools Cross Country Championships for our junior athletes, XCR Round 6 for Open and Masters Athletes, and our annual DAC fundraiser BBQ!  11 Open and Masters athletes, some with a little trepidation, took on 10km of rolling Bundoora Park hills.  Thirteen of our junior athletes competed for their schools over distances ranging from 3-8km.  After a dry week, some morning rain made sure we had the usual muddy, slippery Bundoora course. The scene was set for a great day of cross country running!

Another vital part of the day was the annual Club fundraiser BBQ, which was very well patronised by athletes, officials and spectators alike.  The total amount raised for the club was around $2,000!  A number of club volunteers contributed to this BBQ by cooking, setting up and serving the hungry crowds.  Some of the cooking also took place on Thursday and Friday where batches of hearty soup and yummy treats were produced! A Special thanks go to Andy Parrott, Nathan Down, Liam McLennan and Colleen Kelly for helping all day, Darryl, Sue and Josh Kilmartin, Campbell, Laura, Hamish and Lewis McLennan, Matt Christie, Alessia Wynne, Anthony Paige and Shauna for your hours of help, and David Vaughan, Kate Downward and Alistair Christy for chipping in before or after their race. Well done team!

for their contributions!  The funds raised will help pay for the many expenses and new equipment that have come with the track renovations.  These facilities and equipment will have a long-term positive impact on all DAC athletes present and future!  Thank you to those who contributed as volunteers – you are much appreciated!

DAC shone in these cross country Championships!  Alastair Christy and Erick Niyiragira placed near the front of the 305-strong Open and Masters Men’s field.  Their times, both just over 33 minutes, were impressive!  David Vaughan was again in great form, fourth in the Men’s 50+ age- group.  After starting the winter season with lingering injury, Campbell McLennan is also coming into his own.   Deserving a mention are the other men; Brock Goodings, Brendan Cullen, Jim Finch and Darryl Kilmartin who have been very consistent in their commitment and effort this season!  For some, they’ve done all six rounds of XCR so far!  Our three Masters Ladies – Kate Downward, Sue Kilmartin and Laura McLennan carried DAC in the Women’s event, and had a good day out over a tough course.

The junior fields were all quite large, except in the Under 17 and Under 18 Girl’s events.  Rachel White won her Under 16 (4km) event, and continues having a fantastic season!  Others who just missed the podium were Remy Williams (4th – U18 Boys) and Rosie Lyness (5th – U18 Girls) among very competitive fields!  It was wonderful to see so many of our juniors in action and having such success representing their schools.

Thanks again to our BBQ volunteers and congratulations to all athletes who competed!  A great day for DAC!

Gym relocation Working Bee – Sunday 31st July

We are excited to announce that the DAC gym will be moving trackside into the pavilion giving us more space for more athletes. If you can help for an hour or 2 it would be greatly appreciated. 12:00pm start. Please reply and let us know if you can help. Thank you.

XCR Round 7 – Lakeside 10km Road Championships!

Sunday 7th August (AM) will see the Lakeside 10km take place – hopefully without the sub-zero frosty start!  Most Junior athletes race over 3km, with the U18-20 men and U20 women joining the open ages in the 10km distance. Clubs gather in the back grandstand at Lakeside, athletes trying to warm themselves with some ‘deep heat’ and a dose of nostalgia.  It will be great to get back there after 3 years forced lay-off!  Make sure you finalise your entry (online via AV portal) by midday Wednesday 3rd August!
