AVSL Round 7 – 17/12/2022

Christmas is coming and with Christmas parties aplenty, Doncaster Little Aths with their Open Day and large distances for athletes to travel last weekend, numbers were down and we finished near the bottom. Having finished midfield last round, there were no men in the under 20 or under 14 competition this week, and many age groups were struggling. The men’s over 40 team and women’s under 20 were the standouts. The standout performance was a massive club record of 11.77 for the M40 100 metres to Paul Mierisch, beating his own record of 12.07 set in 2019!

Heading into the Christmas/New Year break, we have dropped to seventh in the Premier Division ladder. With three rounds left until the two weeks of finals, we will need to ensure we have strong attendance at the remaining rounds, as these will be crucial in deciding whether we will contest the promotion or relegation playoff at the finals.

The next round of AVSL is being held at Doncaster and Duncan MacKinnon on Saturday 21st of January. This will also be the round where we will use our Powerplay, doubling our ladder points yield. Entries are not due to open until 5pm on Wednesday 11th of January. However, we strongly encourage everyone to enter in at least two to three events to give us every possible chance of maximising our score.

All results below after a few community announcements !

Tom Kelly Christmas Eve Stations session – Saturday 24th of December

For the last nine years since Tom Kelly’s passing, this session has been held to remember the time and energy he poured into this club.

A favourite of Tom’s, the session can be completed by anyone regardless of age, ability or fitness level. The session starts off with a lap around the oval for the first rep (approx. 400m) with each rep following (10 in total) becoming shorter in distance with the final rep distance being 100m.

When: Saturday 24th of December (Christmas Eve)

Where: Schramms Reserve, JJ Tully Drive, Doncaster (the football ovals behind the Manningham City Council chambers on Doncaster Road)

Time: 8am for an 8:30am start, meet at the front of the pavilion overlooking the top oval.

Zatopek:10

Last Thursday the 15th, a handful of DAC athletes competed in the Zatopek competition with distinction.

In the De Castella U20 3000m, Remy Williams smashed the Under 17 and 18 club records for that distance. Remy lowered the Under 17 record by 6.15 sec (totalling 14.89 seconds off the old record he originally broke at Milers last month), and took 4.39 seconds off Jeff Chambers’ Under 18 club record.

In the Steve Hooker Pole Vault team challenge, Tahlia Grace finished 9th with a clearance of 3.22m. Tahlia also created club history becoming the first DAC athlete to compete in the team challenge at Zatopek since its inception nearly ten years ago. Tahlia also contested the Steigen Pole Vault event in Geelong on Sunday, finishing 6th with a clearance of 3.30m

And, despite missing two of our best 400m runners through injury, our Open Men’s 4x400m team contested the final for the thirteenth consecutive year. The team of Lachlan Reynolds, Kevin Rassool, Peter Holland and Matthew Parrott finished a gallant fourth place in a hotly contested competition.

Also, congratulations to Alastair Christy on winning the ‘A’ Race in the Zatopek Challenge held at Aberfeldie a few days earlier. The Zatopek challenge/lower grades are considered a valuable stepping stone for up-and-coming Victorian long distance runners, to win the A race shows Al has a bright future ahead in athletics.

Christmas Party Wrap-up

Last Tuesday the 13th was our Christmas Party where we were able to contest the annual club handicap races. Brodie Mierisch was the winner of the Peter Ruff 100 metres handicap on Tuesday. It was one of the closest races for years: check out the video on our Facebook page. Lewis McLennan won the Ivan Harding Men’s 800 metres handicap and Alessia Wynne astounded her coach by winning the Tom Kelly Memorial Women’s 800m handicap. And, after applying the secret formula, we are excited to announce the winner of the Adam Robertson Javelin handicap is Lula Parrott! Lula becomes the first female winner of the event since Stephanie Ratcliffe in 2015.

Thank you to everyone who attended and the committee members involved in the setup and running of the event.
