Doncaster Newsletter
The eighth round of Doncaster was held at Box Hill, so Doncaster was reasonably well represented, considering the proximity to Christmas.
In Division 2, Doncaster scored well, coming fourth, but they are now equal second with Mornington, who had to travel a lot further. If we can continue to beat Mornington we will be in the Premier Division next year, where we deserve to be.
The open sprinters were back in force, such that Doncaster went down narrowly to Collingwood, having often been well down the list. The M14 team won their division after the disappointment of the previous week, while the M40, M20, M16 and W14 teams all finished second.
It was a welcome return to Wes Spargo who scored over 500 points and his first Personal Best in five years in the 400 metres hurdles. His 200 was also impressive, so he is in for a good season. Declan Carman (M20 Discus), Mariah Pezos (F14 Discus) and Owen Rice (M16 Hammer), also scored over 500 points, with Abbey Caldwell (F20 800 metres), Kyle Nicolussi (MOP 200 metres) and Daniel Minz (MOP 800 metres) not far below.
Athletes to top the state in Division 2 were Kyle Nicolussi (MOP 200 metres) – Doncaster had eight of the top 14 athletes – Graham Ford (M40 300 hurdles), Wesley Spargo (MOP 400 hurdles), Liam McLennan (M16 1500 walk) and Declan Carmen (M16 Discus). Athletes to top the state in their age groups included Stephanie Larkin (FOP 400 hurdles), Jordan Munyard (M20 100 metres), Declan Carmen (M20 Discus), Abbey Caldwell (F20 800 metres), Alessia Wynne (F18 200 metres), Liam McLennan (M16 1500 walk), Brodie Mierisch (M14 Discus) and Mariah Pezos (F14 Discus).
Momentum at Doncaster is building with more in the winners list than any previous shield round this year. We need to maintain this.
The Shield competition is quite different this year. In the past the final has meant filling your team with your 6/4/2 best athletes for each event. This year there is no limit to the number of athletes in any event. However, apart from competing in four rounds of Shield, you must also compete at least once in the events you wish to compete in. So it is important that athletes start thinking about what events they could participate in at the finals. You will earn many more points by competing in an extra event than running half a second faster in your 200.
Sprinters, could you roll around an 800 after your 200? Perhaps do a high jump, triple, shot or hammer? Remember, there is no limit to the number of athletes we can field in an event, but you need to have run one before the finals. Throwers, could you trot around a 200? Maybe do a jump? Make yourself available for a relay on the day – we can have several relay teams in the one age group if we can find athletes prepared to have a go, scoring double points.
Doncaster is currently equal second in Division 2, but we need to field our best team to qualify for and win the AVSL Final.
Steign Results
On Saturday night we had three DAC athletes compete in the Steign Spectacular at Geelong.
In the 10,000m Josh Maisey finished third in a time of 29:34.59 (an impressive effort backing up from Zatopek last weekend!) and John Portwood finished 22nd in 31:25.07
And Chow Lui contested the inaugural teams event. Athletes start with a 3000m where the slowest twenty teams are eliminated, then a Mile where ten teams are eliminated, five more teams are eliminated after the 800m with the top five teams running the final 400m. Representing Team Maurten, Chow finished 3rd in the 3000m (8:28.83), 2nd in the Mile (4:22.31), 2nd in the 800 (1:56.74) and 4th in the 400m (53.91).
Congratulations to Josh, John and Chow for these outstanding performances!
