Last week was a week of major Victorian competitions with many DAC athletes competing on Tuesday and Thursday night. Five athletes attended a 5000m competition held at Melbourne University in near perfect conditions. David Mitchell produced a massive Season Best time while Campbell McLennan, Boris Mathys, Nathan Down and Alastair Christy all ran Personal Best times as they gear up for the Cross Country season.
Thursday night saw three competitions being held at two venues with Glenhuntly hosting the sprinters at the High Velocity meet. Liam Procaccino won the A 200m race as a last minute entry and was .01 sec off a new PB while training partner Conrad Coumaros finished second in the race. Conrad took the honours in the 100m B race with Liam finishing 3rd. Tristan Robinson finished a respectable 3rd in the 400m A race while Paul Mierisch came 6th in the 400m and 4th in the 100m.
Meanwhile, the throwers and middle distance runners held the AV Throwers and Victorian Milers Club meets at Doncaster where we had a solid turnout. Declan Carman was again the stand out, needing only one throw to win the Open Discus competition and continue his strong run of form while Mariah Pezos finished 7th in the Open Shot Put competition.
On the track, Alastair Christy backed up from his 5000m two days earlier to contest the B 1500m race, finishing second and taking a 1 second Personal Best. Other notable performers were Abbey Caldwell and Connor Gist finishing 1-2 in the Women’s B 800 race and the three Bakker siblings Chiara, Sanne and Josiah finishing second in their respective 800m races.
Nationals cancellation and acknowledgement
Due to the Corona Virus outbreak, the Junior National athletics championships have been cancelled and the Open nationals postponed.
We wish to acknowledge the following athletes who had qualified to compete at the Junior championships: Anthony Jordan, Alessia Wynne, Rachel White, Luke Sinn, Abbey Caldwell, Ashton Sinn, Liam McLennan, Lachlan Reynolds, Will Katic, Lachlan Marasco, Peter Holland, Sanne Bakker, Hannah Williams, Brodie Mierisch, Mariah Pezos, Owen Rice, Declan Carman, Eliza Chivers, Petra Edwards, Tahlia Grace, Isabella Parrott and Lachlan Parrott.
We also wish to acknowledge the athletes who were entered to compete in the Open National Championships: Chow Lui, Kyle Nicolussi, Liam Procaccino, Daniel Minz, Conrad Coumaros, Kevin Rassool, Wesley Spargo, Nicole Reynolds and Declan Carman.
Cross Country 2020
The timetable for the new cross country season has been released with round one scheduled (at this stage) to commence at Jells Park on Saturday 16th of April. The current membership period expires at the end of this month, if you wish to compete please renew your registration after April 1 to avoid paying twice.
The only major change to the XC calendar is the Anglesea round has been changed to a 12km race around Geelong Gardens with St Anne’s Winery becoming the Ekiden Relay round.
