2019-01-12 Shield Round 9

Doncaster Newsletter

After the eighth round was washed out, the ninth round of Shield competition saw a number of athletes missing because of the holidays. The men’s open team had a close tussle with Collingwood and a stirring win in the 4 x 200 relay. The men’s under 14 had their highest score of the season!

For the third competition in a row the women’s open team finished in second position and look like making the finals. Unfortunately there were no women competing in the under 14 team this week.

With a strong wind at Glenhuntly time were generally slow.

  • Tristan Robinson and Abbey De La Motte made it a DAC Double with both winning the Open 1500m while Cameron Noonan finished second in the Under 18 race
  • Charlie Oakley had a go at the 2000m steeple to help the Under 14 Men earn some extra points as well as qualify for Shield Final, Charlie handled the race brilliantly despite having never done steeple before
  • Out at Werribee Noah Sewak finished second in the Under 14 High Jump and Triple Jump, Owen Rice won the Under 14 Shot Put competition and finished fourth in the elite Hammer Throw and Caleb and Ethan Sinn finished second and third respectively in the Elite Men’s 800m race
  • And in Geelong Stephanie Larkin won the Open 400m Hurdles in her third fastest ever time for that event before backing up in the 200m 30 minutes later

This weekend we will be back at Doncaster which will be the final time we host Shield this season, we would love to see as many if not all DAC athletes and their families come along to compete and support the club at our home track. The round will be particularly important for our Under 18 and Open Women who are barely holding on to second place in their ladders and will need a massive showing this weekend and for the remaining two rounds after to guarantee their place at Shield Final.

Upcoming competitions:

Saturday 19th AV Shield Round 10 – Doncaster

Saturday 2nd February AV Shield Round 11 – Knox (Shield Final program) and Werribee

Saturday 9th February AV Shield Round 12 – Epping (Shield Final program) and Nunawading

Saturday 23rd February AV Shield Final  – Lakeside Stadium (qualified teams: Open Men, 40+ Men, Under 20 Women, Under 16 Men and Under 14 Men. Nearly qualified: Open and Under 18 Women)
