The last round of the Shield Competition saw athletes travelling to Nunawading and Meadowglen where the weather was most unpleasant for athletics, with some rain and strong winds most of the day.
Undefeated all year, the Men’s Under 14 team easily won the Zone Championship and should be very competitive in the Shield Final, though there will be strong competition from Essendon and Wyndham. A good win in the final round saw the Men’s Under 16 team claim their first Zone Championship since 1993 by one point. Other teams to finish second, and so become eligible for Shield Final include: Men’s Open, Men’s 40+, Women’s Open, Women’s Under 20 and Women’s Under 18, a great effort. Teams placed third in the Men’s Under 18 (equal) and Women’s Under 14.

The last round saw some very impressive performances including:
– Leighton Kearney had a dominant win in the 40+ 1500m despite the testing conditions while Luke Sinn led from start to finish and Caleb McLennan ran a Personal Best in their respective Under 16 races
– Owen Rice won the Elite Discus by just under 3m and finished 2nd in the elite Shot Put
– Kai Sapolu continued is incredible hurdles form by winning the Under 14 sprint Hurdles race
– Ethan Sinn won the Under 18 800m while training partners Melissa Niewoudt and Alissa Ramsdale both came 2nd in their respective 800m heats
– And there were wins to Stephanie Larkin in the Open 400m Hurdles, Christian Christopher in the Open 200m, Noah Sewak in the Under 14 Triple Jump and Stephanie Ratcliffe in Under 20 Shot Put
