Round 9 – 13/03/2021
This week was a washout, so very unsatisfactory day at the office. We managed to get through about half the program before it was abandoned, but generally, performances were down in the wet and windy conditions.
Considering this, Laura McLennan ran a brilliant 1500 metres, breaking her record by 50 seconds! Not far behind her, Colleen Kelly ran 6:49.7 creating a new record.
With the round being abandoned, few athletes completed three events, and Graham Ford was the only one to score more than 1,000 points.
Athletes to finish in the top 10 in the state for over 40 were:
100 metres: Paul Mierisch (5th) Wendy Smith (6th) Laura McLennan (7th) Graham Ford (10th)
400 metres: David Firth (6th)
1500 metres: Colleen Kelly (3rd) Laura McLennan (9th) Campbell McLennan (9th)
5000 metres: John Curry (9th)
Long Jump: Darryl Kilmartin (3rd) Laura McLennan (5th)
Triple Jump: Kim Peak (6th)
Javelin: Graham Ford (3rd)
Shot Put: Kim Peak (9th)
Discus: Graham Ford (6th) Paul Mierisch (8th) Kim Peak (6th)
Hammer Throw: David Firth (6th)
Apart from the records already mentioned, it was pointed out that last week Matt Hughes actually broke the M45 shot put record, so Paul Mierisch retains his M40 record and Warren Hattwich loses his. Kim Peak also broke one record and set a new one, while Darryl Kilmartin broke his long jump and finished third in the state. A remarkable effort.

Remember apart from competing in three rounds of AVSL, you also need to compete in the events you wish to enter at the playoffs. These are: 100m, 1500m, 2000m Walk, 2000m/3000m Steeple, Long Jump, Pole Vault, Javelin and Discus. These events are available at Nunawading this weekend. You have until midday Wednesday to enter.
