XCR Round 1 – Saturday 22nd April

Round 1 kicked off XCR 2023 with a bang!  Nine 40+ Athletes travelled to Jells Park in Mt Waverly for the cross country relays.  3 teams took on tough opposition, on a day that was picture-perfect for running.  There needed to be a few last-minute changes to teams, and this kept the team manager Campbell McLennan, on his toes!  Thanks to Campbell for your efforts!  All 40+ Athletes ran 2 loops of the course (total 6km).  It was prudent to know the course beforehand – just when the finish seemed near, another uphill dog-leg was upon you!  However, this also made for excellent spectator viewing as athletes passed the club tents.  A great “Go Donnie” opportunity!!

It was a great effort by Lydia Rinaudo (fastest female DAC 40+), whilst we welcomed invitation athlete and good friend of Lydia’s, Emma Schuette.  The women’s team was completed by newcomer Emily Jackson who ran a solid final leg – fantastic to have you join us for season 2023!   The invitation women’s 40+ team were placed 5th on time, and not far out of the placings!

Brendan Cullen was in fine form – quickest of the DAC 40+ athletes, and was joined by Michael Gallacher, who has returned to winter competition.  Vice President, Campbell McLennan (coming along with others of the McLennan clan) completed the Men’s 40+ team.   Stalwarts Jim Finch, John Curry and Jason Merrett had a good outing as the 50+ team, firing for round 1 over the 6km course.  The competition among the men’s categories was fierce, but teams made a wonderful start to the season.

See all 40+ results in the table below.  Congratulations to all who competed!  We hope to see many more 40+ athletes back in action as the season continues.  A few have been injured or are suffering illness.  Keep in contact with them, and give them a small nudge, and some encouragement!

A shout for Club Volunteers during XCR 2023!

DAC are required to provide volunteers/officials during several XCR rounds.  In Round 1 – a huge thanks to Leighton Kearney, Laurie Scholes-Robertson, and Amanda McLellan for their dedicated assistance!  Parents, partners, friends, and injured athletes are all requested to ‘lend a helping hand’ where possible to share the load.

Thanks also goes to Brendan Cullen for sharing lamingtons, homemade slice, and coffee. What a champ!
