Round 7 – 27/07/25
Eighteen DAC distance runners took on Lakeside 10. This is one of the favourite events in the winter series, with athletes hoping to post a good 10km time on a fast and flat course. This year, the 10km field was split up to reduce congestion at the start. A very large 700-strong Men’s field started bright and early at 8.30am. The conditions were quite good – cool, relatively dry surface, and only a slight breeze. 200-plus Women were next at 9.35am, and a sleep in for Junior and Short Course (3km) athletes for their start at 10.40am.
The DAC Men’s Open team were very well represented this round, and William Sullivan was welcomed for the first time this season. Colleen Kelly was back from a trip to her Irish homeland, having hiked, jogged and gained renewed vigour. Colleen has battled injury in previous years and achieved an outstanding 52:35 and was 3rd in the Women’s 60+ age group. Other podium placegetters were David Vaughan, Campbell McLennan and Jason Merrett – a clean sweep of Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Men’s 50 short-course event. Several others finished in the top 10 – Lydia Rinaudo (40-44, 4th), Kath Gawthorn (50-54, 8th), Darryl Kilmartin (Short course, 55-59, 6th), Hamish McLennan (Short course, U18, 4th) and Tim Denny (45-49, 8th). Tim Denny’s 10km was particularly good – 36:46 and up there with the Open men. Erich Fangmeier, a newcomer in season 2025, progressed to racing over 10km and put in an outstanding effort. Our President, Nathan Down, was firing and Jim Finch, Shawn Ko, Brock Goodings and Nick Finch were at their consistent best. John Portwood posted the fastest 10km time for DAC – 31:25.
There was a shortage of Junior athletes this round. However, Hamish (U18) and Lewis (U16) McLennan held the fort. They finished within a second of each other pushing right to the finish. Both should be rightly proud of their progress – 10:15 for 3km a fantastic result!
